Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar (SGPC), an apex body of Sikhs residing all over the world, is a religious charitable and humanitarian organisation. Besides managing the Sikh shrines, it runs a number of educational institutions, charitable hospitals, saraya and homes for physically/mentally challenged people. Though the primary objective of the SGPC is religious, it also performs multidimensional functions for inculcating high ethical values, a humanistic outlook, healthy habits and scientific temper among the community through its educational institutions. SGPC earnestly realises the need to make its contribution in the field of education in order to serve society in a much more holistic way. Education in Sikhism means continuous development and integration of the human personality. It aims at widening the wisdom horizon of a person for the development of spiritual tendencies.

We firmly believe in “Contemplate & reflect upon knowledge and you become a benefactor to others” The major contribution of SGPC lies in making primary and higher education accessible to the ordinary people, especially in the remote areas of the region. As head of the SGPC, the supreme body of the Sikhs, it has been our earnest effort to establish institutions of higher education imparting education in diverse fields. At present, SGPC is running 52 schools and 32 institutions of higher education, including 4 engineering institutes and 1 medical college and 1 university. We are committed to providing such a learning environment in our institutions that not only protects and nourishes the creativity of the students but also makes them good and responsible citizens. The SGPC is conscious of the changing trends in education and is therefore taking bold steps in this direction to negotiate with international universities and organisations so as to meet the international standards in education and explore new vistas of knowledge in order to enable our youth to touch new heights in life. A lot has been done in the last few decades and still more needs to be done in the years to come. Hence, we are committed to putting all our efforts into strengthening our educational institutions in order to impart value-based quality education as well as make it accessible and affordable for all. May WAHEGURU be our inspiration and strength through this endeavour.

“Contemplate & reflect upon knowledge and you become a benefactor to others” The major contribution of SGPC lies in making school and higher education accessible to ordinary people and remote areas of the region. As head of the SGPC, the supreme body of the Sikhs, it has been our earnest endeavour to establish institutions of higher education imparting education in diverse fields. At present, SGPC runs 72 schools and 39 institutions of higher education, which also include 4 engineering institutes and 2 medical colleges. Recently, a multi-disciplinary university named Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University has also been established at Fatehgarh Sahib. We are committed to providing such a learning environment in our institutions which, besides protecting and nourishing the creativity of students, also makes them good citizens. The SGPC is conscious of the changing trends in education and therefore taking bold steps in this direction to negotiate with international universities and organisations so as to meet the international standards in education. Thus, SGPC is making all out efforts to scan new vistas of knowledge so that our youth can touch new heights in life. Much has been done in the last few decades and still more needs to be done in the years to come. We plan to open 11 new schools and 10 institutions of higher education in the next two years. May WAHEGURU be our inspiration and strength through this endeavour.

SHIROMANI GURDWARA PARBANDHAK COMMITTEE, SRI AMRITSAR SAHIB (SGPC)

SHIROMANI GURDWARA PARBANDHAK COMMITTEE, SRI AMRITSAR SAHIB (SGPC)

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar abbreviated as SGPC and called as mini-parliament of Sikhs, is directly elected through election by the Sikh sangat i.e. Sikh male and female voters above 18 years of age who are registered as voters under the provisions of the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925.

This Act was enacted by the British Punjab Government after assent of the Punjab Governor-General on July 28, 1925, A.D. which was published first time in Punjab Gazette of August 07, 1925, A.D. This Act came into force on November 1, 1925, A.D. following its official notification No. 4288-S dated October 12, 1925, A.D.

Following the demise of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in June 1839, A.D. the Sikh Empire started to decline and it finally lasted till March 1849, A.D. when the British government took over the charge in Punjab.
To take control of Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, the British government first appointed a “Chief Administrator” (Sarabraah) through deputy commissioner (DC), Amritsar and the use of gurdwara management started to take place for establishing Christianity in Punjab.

Slowly, the devout Sikhs began to break away from the Guru Ghars and during the British rule, the management of Gurdwaras came into the hands of udasi mahants, and these managers played in the hands of the ruling power.
Following, to rectify the deterioration in the management of the Gurdwaras, the alert or conscious Gursikhs organized themselves to consolidate the power and capability and formed Singh Sabha Lehar (movement) and Chief Khalsa Diwan. With these developments, the Sikhs started Gurdwara Reform Movement to improve management in Gurdwaras.
